Project Overview

Matched Bearing Development for a CNC Rotary B-Axis

TEDIN worked with a high-end five-axis CNC machine tool manufacturer to develop a matched tapered roller bearing set for the rotary B-axis. The bearing position required high rigidity, smooth motion and stable positioning accuracy under repeated indexing and cutting loads.

Application Background

A bearing position that directly affects machining stability

In a five-axis CNC machine tool, the B-axis rotary table must handle tilting movement, precise indexing and continuous cutting loads. Any variation in bearing preload, rigidity or running accuracy can be reflected in positioning error, vibration or reduced surface quality.

The customer needed more than a standard replacement bearing. The requirement was a matched bearing set developed around the rotary table’s load condition, accuracy target and long-term maintenance needs.

01

Bearing Position

The set was developed for the rotary B-axis, where the bearings support tilting movement, indexing accuracy and machining loads within a compact rotary table structure.

02

Operating Demand

The application required higher support rigidity, reduced vibration and stable rotational accuracy during repeated positioning and heavy-duty cutting.

03

Development Scope

TEDIN provided a paired tapered roller bearing solution covering internal structure optimization, precision component manufacturing and set-level matching inspection.

Replacement Bearing Models

High-Precision Tapered Roller Bearings Supplied for the Project

TEDIN supplied 329, 320 and 323 series high-precision tapered roller bearings as matched-set options for the customer’s B-axis rotary table application.

Customer Challenge

Finding a Bearing Set That Could Hold B-Axis Accuracy

The customer had tried several bearing options for the B-axis rotary table. Most of them could meet the installation size. The harder part was keeping the axis stable during repeated indexing, tilting movement and long machining cycles.

Challenge Background

Size compatibility was only the starting point

For this rotary table, the bearing set had to do more than fit into the existing space. It had to support the table during positioning and cutting, while keeping rotation smooth over long operating periods.

In previous trials, some bearings looked suitable on paper but showed limitations after installation. Small changes in running smoothness or support stiffness could affect positioning repeatability and leave marks on the machined surface.

Key Pain Points

Where the previous options fell short

  • Some bearings met the required dimensions, but did not provide enough stability for precision rotary movement.
  • Rotation became less consistent after long running periods.
  • Vibration marks appeared in some precision machining conditions.
  • The B-axis needed better support during repeated indexing and tilting movement.
Challenge summary: The customer needed a bearing set that could fit the existing B-axis structure while keeping the rotary table stable during real machining conditions.
TEDIN Technical Solution

Engineering the Bearing Set Around B-Axis Performance

TEDIN developed the solution as a matched tapered roller bearing set rather than a direct single-bearing substitution. The work focused on pairing, structure, manufacturing control and final verification.

01

Matched set configuration

The bearings were prepared as a paired set instead of two independent units, helping the assembly maintain more consistent preload behavior after installation.

02

Internal structure optimization

Hollow rollers, a one-piece solid cage and an anti-rib structure were used to reduce friction and support smoother rotary movement.

03

In-house precision grinding

Key bearing surfaces were processed through TEDIN’s in-house grinding process to improve dimensional consistency between supplied sets.

04

Final set verification

Each matched set was checked for dimensional matching, running condition and rotational accuracy before delivery.

Performance Results

Approved for B-Axis Rotary Table Application

The final bearing set passed TEDIN’s inspection and met the customer’s requirements for use in the B-axis rotary table.

Application Result

Stable performance after installation

After installation, the rotary table operated steadily during repeated positioning and machining cycles. The customer accepted the bearing set as a reliable replacement option for this high-precision bearing position.

The solution was approved for B-axis rotary table use and became a validated option for future precision machine tool projects.

Accuracy Snapshot

Key inspection values

  • Ring cone angle deviation: within ±0.001 mm.
  • Rolling element precision: Grade 1.
  • Bore diameter ≤ 200 mm: rotational accuracy ≤ 0.003 mm.
  • Bore diameter > 200 mm: rotational accuracy ≤ 0.005 mm.
